Basic Countermeasures Equipment


Hand-held unit detects bias oscillator radiation from many, but not all, types of operating tape recorders. The 2059H has signal light and audible beeper while the 2059HV has a signal light and silent vibrator. Probe is detachable for covert operation. Powered by two 9-volt batteries (Alkaline always preferred). Complete system includes detector unit, probe, probe extension cable and instructions. Total length with probe attached is 11 inches

The 2059H very low frequency (VLF) detector covers from 5 to 200 KHz. Many, but not all, tape recorders contain a bias oscillator that operates in this frequency range. This radiation can usually be detected at ranges from 6 to 60 inches (15 to 150 centimeters). The 2059H indicates the presence of bias oscillator radiation via a small signal light or buzzer.

OPERATION: Turn the unit ON by rotating the SENSITIVITY control in a clockwise direction. The POWER light emitting diode (LED) indicates that the unit is ON. Place the 3 position YELLOW capped SIGNAL switch in the middle position. Turn the SENSITIVITY control to maximum. If the SIGNAL light comes on, slowly decrease the SENSITIVITY until the light is barely extinguished. Pass the 2059H probe over the suspect package or area. The SIGNAL light indicates a tape recorder operating in the record mode. If an audible alarm is desired, place the YELLOW switch in the UP position (towards the lettering).

The 2059H may also be worn covertly. Remove the probe from the main detector assembly and plug it into the extension cable supplied. Pass the cable up through a shirt or coat sleeve and down to a pocket. Plug the cable into the PROBE jack on the detector and place it in the pocket. Place the YELLOW switch in the down position (away from lettering). Conceal the probe by placing it in a small paperback book or rolled newspaper. In this mode the SIGNAL light will turn on and remain on once a recorder has been detected. To reset the light, move the YELLOW switch to the middle position and back to the down position.

The 2059H draws approximately 8 milliamps in stand-by and 20 milliamps in the alerting state. The unit is powered by two (2) 9 volt Alkaline batteries that provide approximately 50 hours of operating time. To replace the batteries, loosen the screw on each side of the detector assembly one or two turns. With the printed side down, carefully lift off the back cover. Remove the old batteries and replace with fresh ones. Replace the back cover, being careful not to pinch the battery leads. Tighten the two screws (don't over-tighten).

OPERATING NOTES: The 2059H is a very sensitive low frequency detector but it should be noted that there are some conditions under which operation can be impaired. Probably the worst offender is the 15 KHz sweep oscillator found in all TV sets and computer monitors. The 2059H can detect an operating TV at distances up to 100 feet! Carrier current signals on power lines and local submarine communication systems can also cause problems. Mentioned earlier was the fact that many, but not ALL, tape recorders contain a bias oscillator. Some contain a small permanent magnet to pre-bias the tape. The 2059H can not detect this type of recorder.
